Christian Based Homeschooling

Education is far more than only teaching subject content. Education is also teaching values and norms. The values learned in public schools are not wrong but they might be based on a wide variety of religions and Christian parents don’t always feel comfortable with this. They also feel there is not always enough emphasis on values in the teaching.

Christian based homeschooling is an alternative to public schooling. In homeschooling the focus can be on the Christian values while the necessary subject content is still learned.

The Christian based curriculum won’t necessarily teach different subjects from the general homeschooling curriculum or the public school curriculum. The difference will be in the way the subjects are addressed.

Where science in a secular curriculum is many times based on the evolution theory philosophy, a Christian curriculum will teach it based on the bible. The subject content won’t change but the values attached to it will be from a different point of view.

To have a successful Christian based homeschool parents will have to comply with the basic requirements and the laws in their specific state. If the laws of that state requires certain subjects to be taught the parents won’t have a choice if they want to teach the subjects or not. They will, however, have the choice in how they want to teach the subjects. They would be able to teach it according to the Christian beliefs.

Christian based homeschooling normally also includes religious instruction or biblical studies as part of their curriculum. These subjects are not part of the public school’s curriculum and if it is, it focuses on teaching many different religions. Christian parents feel it is not necessary for their children to learn about other religions as they already have their own belief system.

Religious instruction and the teaching of the right values and norms are one of the main reasons why families prefer homeschooling to public schooling.

As long as Christian homeschools comply with the laws of the state and a quality curriculum is used there is, in that aspect, no real difference between a Christian and secular based homeschooling program. The only fundamental difference will be the point of view and the philosophy on which the teaching is based. In Christian homeschooling the bible and its instructions regarding values and beliefs will form the basis of the teaching.
