Homeschooling High School Curriculum

There is definitely not a shortage on information available on homeschooling curriculums for high school students. Finding the correct curriculum can sometimes be overwhelming for parents.

This article should be read in collaboration with the article on homeschooling programs on this website.

Apart from choosing the correct curriculum to allow your child to be accepted at a university or college the laws of your specific state must always be kept in mind.

The easiest but also the most expensive is to enroll your child in an online homeschooling program for high school. You will be able to obtain the correct and most updated curriculum this way.

It is, however, not always affordable for all homeschooling parents.

Support groups and other homeschooling parents are valuable resources to assist with choosing the correct curriculum. If you have these resources available in your area it would be a good starting point.

The website HSLDA has a substantial page on high school curriculum. Specific subjects are dealt with and there are references to where support material for these subjects are available. It also explains the different curriculums and methods of homeschooling from the classical way to the unschooling way of homeschooling.

Homeschool.com and homeschoolbuyersco-op.org have some really valuable curriculum resources that are all for free. It ranges from online videos to e-books that can be downloaded.

Subject choices for the high school curriculum are extremely important. You will, however, have to be realistic in these choices. Subject choices should be looked upon with the future in mind as well as the child’s abilities. By now you would know your child’s abilities and interests. It has never worked and it will never work to try and force a child into the parent’s preferred career choice. A true artist won’t become a physicist unless his name is Da Vinci.  The same would be true for the accounting genius who would not be the next Hollywood star.

In some states certain subjects are required to graduate from high school. Many times math, science and a foreign language are compulsory. That can’t be changed and even if the child is not interested in math or science you will have to encourage him or her to complete the course.

Children that have the ability should take as many different subjects as they are capable of to give them an advantage with further studies. The value of math, science and business related subjects can never be argued. Languages are also very important. Art subjects unlock the child’s natural creativity and can build confidence.

Do as much as you can with what you have available. Motivate your children and rely on them to lead you into choosing their high school curriculum.
