Homeschooling High School Program

Choosing the correct high school program for your child is very important. Tertiary education will require certain subjects or grades. If these weren’t taken into consideration during the high school years the child might not meet the requirements for his or her preferred study field.

During the first high school years the child might not yet know in which direction he or she wants to pursue further studies. Children also regularly change their minds. The best will be to have a curriculum with a wide variety of quality subjects that will allow for most degree programs.

The colleges with the strictest submission regulations expect a child to have taken challenging science and math courses that go beyond the general math and science for grade 12. Some colleges also prefer a three or four year foreign language course.

If a child knows which degree program or which college he or she is interested in, it would be good to contact the college to inquire about their requirements before the high school program is chosen.

The easiest but also the most expensive option will be an online high school program. If the program complies with the college requirements the parent will have the peace of mind that the child will be adequately prepared for further tertiary education.

Bob Jones University, for instance, has a homeschooling program which will be the most suitable for children planning on going to this university.

For parents that might find it too expensive to enroll in one of these courses it will still be possible to help your child to get the necessary quality education for college.

Make sure your child do a wide variety of subjects. If you can afford it buy only the more difficult courses such as advanced science, math or a foreign language course. You might be able to find used courses on e-bay or at your homeschooling support group.

Enroll your child for at least one year in a visual art or performing arts course. In 30 of the states in the USA it is required for a child to take one of these courses before they can graduate from high school. For 6 universities it is a submission requirement.

If you comply with these requirements from the first year of high school education there should be no disappointments in later years. Rather do too much than too little.
