Negative Effects Of Homeschooling – Social Disadvantages

There are negative effects of homeschooling, definitely and one of the negative effect would be, social skills. Social skills are something that needs to be learned from a very young age. Children with limited social skills will always be at a disadvantage, from the workplace to their personal lives.

Social skills can’t only be learned at home. Children with other siblings in the house have a bit of an advantage over an only child, in this regard. It is however, not enough to just socialize with other siblings. Children need to socialize with peers that come from different backgrounds, have different points of view and interests.

Socializing opportunities are one of the biggest concerns of people that are against homeschooling. In a public school environment children are forced to interact with a number of children that share a classroom with them. They learn to accept and tolerate children that are very different from them. They, sometimes, have no choice but to work with other children in groups. They might not like it, but they learn to get use to it. In the process they learn to listen to different viewpoints. They also learn to motivate their own beliefs and ideas.

Children in homeschooling won’t have this interaction and they can do projects the way they prefer. This child can start to belief his or her way is the only correct way. Later on in life it can become a serious problem. Children that are never challenged in their views won’t learn to motivate and argue their viewpoints.

Even though this is a very real problem there are many ways to overcome it and most parents are aware of the importance of socializing with peers.

Children in homeschooling will have more free time than children in public schools. There are ample opportunities for children to learn social skills outside the school environment. Attending workshops or classes with other children will immediately give the child a chance to participate in group activities. Social or sport clubs will also be ideal for interaction with other children. In areas where there are many children in homeschooling it would be possible for the parents to start groups where the children can get together with other children of the same age.

A sensible parent would create opportunities for a child where these necessary skills can be learned without having to decide against homeschooling.
